USMLE Step 1 "MUST HAVE" Books

USMLE Step 1 Best Books Reviews and Recommendations - USMLE Step 1 "Must Have" Books
Quick List - First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 , Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple, BRS Pathology, Lippincott Pharmacology, Step-Up to USMLE Step 1, and the Underground Clinical Vignettes Step 1

First and Foremost - we recommend First Aid for the USMLE Step 1. You know why! Basically First Aid for the USMLE has served as the "bible" for the usmle step one Recommended Books and Audio for years because it a great comprehensive resource that contains tons of high-yield facts on all the need-to-know subjects and is packed with mnemonics and memory tricks. Our recommendation is that you pick up the latest copy of First Aid your first year in medical school and go through the entire book time and time again while you are studying for you classes in medical school. When it comes time for you take your usmle step one at the end of your second year, consider picking up the latest edition so you will have the latest usmle step one testing information. Although the changes are small from year-to-year, they build up over a two or so year period and will make using the latest edition of the textbook worthwhile in studying for the USMLE Step 1. Each year the book is a little better, especially since its switch to an systems based approach to USMLE Step one Review. If you only had $40 dollars to your name, and could only buy one book to study for the entire USMLE Step 1, First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 would be that book, and that`s why First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 is #1 on our list of "Must Have" USMLE Books in Apollo`s USMLE Best Book Reviews! Our next USMLE Best Book Recommendation is Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. As you may already know, there`s really not that much that`s "simple" about microbiology; however Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple really helps organize a not so simple subject. The other great thing about Clinical Microbiology, is that it gives you a host of great mnemonics, pictures and memory tricks that really make microbiology a lot easier. Clinical Microbiology also hits all the high points and high yield subjects for the USMLE Step 1. But Clinical Microbiology is not just a "high-yield" type of book. It really is a comprehensive textbook that has all the tables, and minutia that will be covered on the USMLE Step 1 Recommended Books and Audio. The book is great really great though at giving you memory tricks to remember the high yield information for the USMLE Step 1, and that`s why it makes "Must Have" status on our USMLE Step 1 Best Books Reviews and Recomendations.

BRS Pathology - "Must Have"
Our next USMLE Step 1 "Must Have" Book is BRS Pathology. There is no way around it, you`ve got to cover a lot of material to get through Pathology as a medical student - but there`s a reason. . . There`s a ton of pathology on the the USMLE Step 1!!! That`s where BRS Pathology comes in handy. BRS Pathology is dense and and it has a lot of necessary information you`ll need for the USMLE Step 1. Basically as a medical student you have to pick and choose what books you`re going to read, and which ones you have to leave behind - and BRS Pathology is definately a keeper. It takes over 1000 pages of USMLE Step 1 Pathology Information and condenses it into 460 pages!

The next USMLE Step One Best Book Recommendation is Lippincott Pharmacology. One of the best things about Lippincott Pharm is its layout. Each class of drug is set out in exactly the same format, so you know what to expect from chapter to chapter and from class to class. Lippincott Pharm is full of great tips and high-yield facts, and this too is a comprehensive USMLE Step 1 resource. This books has been a trusted source for USMLE Step 1 information for years recommended from class to class and even from older brothers to their younger siblings! Lippincott Pharm is truely a "Must Have" USMLE Step 1 Book!

Our next USMLE Step One "Must Have" Recommended Book is Step-Up to USMLE Step 1 . We recommend that students use Step-Up to USMLE Step 1 as a necessary adjunct to First Aid for the USMLE Step 1. Step-Up is a shorter book and a little less dense, so it make s for a little faster and easier read. Our belief is that the all of the high-yeild, big USMLE Step 1 topics will be covered in both First Aid and Step-Up. Going through this USMLE book from front to back will reinforce all those top-tested points. Step-Up presents the information a little differently that we find complements the First Aid book in a lot of ways. Go through Step-Up several times to really reinforce the USMLE Step 1 hot topics! That`s why Step-Up is one of our top USMLE book recommendations!

Apollo`s final "Must Have" Best USMLE Step 1 Book Recommendation is the actually a series of books - Underground Clinical Vignettes Step 1. Now a lot of students may think "I`ll save the clinical vignettes for later, when I have more time." But in reality - this kind of thinking is really backward for two reasons. Number one - most of your test questions on the USMLE Step 1 are in "clinical vignette" format. Number 2 - you`re training to be a doctor and really you`re preparing for a lifetime  of clinical vignettes called "every patient you`ll ever meet!" So UCV Step 1 is a great series of books to prepare you for the USMLE Step 1 exam and prepare you for a lifetime as a physician. In addition, the UCV  vignettes for Step 1 carry over well for the USMLE Step 2 and USMLE Step 3 as well! For all these reasons, don`t "save" Step 1 vignettes for later "when you have more time." Buy the entire UCV series for the USMLE Step 1 and start studying them as a first year medical student. You will be surprised how a clinical vignette from UCV will really help you bring together all those random facts from anatomy pharmacology and all those subjects that may seem not linked together.

USMLE Step One “Highly Recommended” Books

USMLE Step 1 Best Books Reviews and Recommendations - USMLE Step 1 "Highly Recommended" Books
Quick List: USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry Q & A, USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy Q & A, High-Yield Biostatistics, First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 Q & A, Rapid Review Pathology, BRS Physiology, First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1, High Yield Neuroanatomy, BRS Gross Anatomy, High-Yield Behavioral Science

USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry“Highly Recommended”
Our First USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry Q&A. For the USMLE Step 1 we recommend a review book that is rather short and to-the-point, and USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry Q&A is a book that fits the bill. Many students finds that because the USMLE Step One is a culmination of the first two years of medical school, there tends to be a little less of the “basic” biochemistry on the USMLE Step 1 exam, and more of the “clinical” biochemistry, and high-yield topics.  Disclaimer - Apollo Audiobooks produced the USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry AUDIO - so we admit we may be a little biased toward this book. That being said, USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry is still a review of biochemistry for the USMLE Step 1. We recommend  USMLE Help Step 1 Biochemistry Q&A as the text for a rapid review of your biochemistry knowledge for the USMLE Step 1.

USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy Q&A “Highly Recommended”
Our Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy Q&A . Basically, we recommend this USMLE Step One review book for many of the same reasons we recommend the biochemistry book above. More of the USMLE Step 1 is focused on the pathology and pathophysiology of human disease than straight-forward clinical anatomy – so you need a quick anatomy review – and USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy Q&A fits the bill. It is a quick, high yield, hard-hitting question and answer book that covers applicable anatomy. Disclaimer - Apollo Audiobooks will produce the USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy AUDIO scheduled for release in April 2009 - se we admit we may be a little biased toward this book. That being said, USMLE Help Step 1 Anatomy is a great review of anatomy for the USMLE Step 1.This USMLE Step 1 review book is recommended because it is quick and to the point.

High-Yield Biostatistics “Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is High-Yield Biostatistics.
We had a hard time deciding whether to place High-Yield Biostatistics as a “Must Have” or a “Highly Recommended” USMLE Step One book – and finally decided to place it here. High-Yield Biostatistics is almost a “Must Have” because there is no way to avoid a little biostatistics on the USMLE Step 1. This book covers all the basics of biostatistics, and although short, will be more than sufficient for a USMLE Step 1 Review. Sensitivity and Specificity, Types of Clinical Trials, and more all laid out in a simple and relatively understandable format in High-Yield Biostatistics – and that’s why it is one of our recommended USMLE Step 1 best books.

First Aid Q&A for the USMLE Step 1“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is First Aid Q&A for the USMLE Step 1.
As most medical students will agree, people use First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 because it is a great comprehensive source of information and really helps promote USMLE 1 Success. The First Aid team has translated that expertise into First Aid Q&A for the USMLE Step 1 with over 1000 exam style USMLE questions, organ systems break-down, basic science sections, and a large “practice test.” We recommend using First Aid Q&A for USMLE Step 1 along with the First Aid book – as the two compliment each other nicely, covering many of the same important USMLE topics while each goes into a little different details on other topics. In addition, we recommend this Step1 USMLE took because the explanations are more thorough than other resources. First Aid Q&A for the USMLE Step 1 provides explanations of both the correct and incorrect questions – allowing you to see and evaluate the answer choices from both sides. That’s why First Aid Q&A for the USMLE Step 1 is another USMLE Step 1 Best Book Recommendation for the USMLE Step 1.

Rapid Review Pathology“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is Rapid Review Pathology.
If there is one book that has really taken the USMLE world review by storm in the last few years, it has to be Rapid Review Pathology by Dr. Goljan. This pathology text has many devotees who swear that is this path to USMLE success because it is a comprehensive pathology text with great color slides and photos, and quick discussion of other USMLE applicable topics such as biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology. In addition, many students utilize Dr. Goljan’s audio reviews and USMLE study materials which compliment the text – making this USMLE book a great comprehensive resource and one of our USMLE Recommendations as a Best Book. On the other hand, as far as pathology for the USMLE goes – each person seems to have his own preference and there are three camps that recommend three books as the Best USMLE Recommended Pathology Text. One group, and our bias, is that shorter is better and recommend BRS Pathology for the USMLE over Rapid Review Pathology. Another group that want the absolute most-comprehensive USMLE 1 scores pathology text possible recommend Robbins Review of Pathology. And the third group who like a great comprehensive text, and one that is a little shorter and is associated with Dr. Goljan’s audio and other review materials, recommend Goljan’s Rapid Review Pathology above all else. So for pathology, pick your poison – any way you look at it, you’ve got to cover a lot of pathology for USMLE Step 1 Success – and that’s why Rapid Review Pathology is one of our USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Best Books for the USMLE Step 1.

BRS Physiology“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is BRS Physiology.
BRS Physiology is the only “physiology” text to make our USMLE Step 1 Best Books Reviews because it is consistently recommended as the best physiology book for the USMLE year after year. In the view of many, BRS Physiology is the best BRS Book of the entire series. It is a comprehensive USMLE Step 1 resource, it covers all aspects of physiology in bullet format, and has several comprehensive tables and figures that summarize important and high-yield topics for the USMLE Step 1. BRS Physiology can be used a “quick and dirty” read a few times through before the USMLE Step1 exam, or it can be used during your med school physiology course (again our bias for a little shorter text whenever you can get away with it). In addition, the explanations are clear and the book even covers neurophysiology – and that’s why BRS physiology is a USMLE Best Books “Highly Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Book.

First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1.
First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1 makes the list because clinical cases are a great way to put together all the “stuff” you learn in medical school into a functional, testable, usable format. We believe that studying clinical cases will really help you on the USMLE Step 1 as well as for your rotations on the wards and your future career as a “real” physician. Classic cases are “classic” because these are the cases you will see in real life, and they are often tested on USMLE boards exam such as the NBMEs and USMLE Steps. Going over these clinical cases will help you for both the USMLE Step 1 and all future USMLE Step exams, because the most questions are written in a “clinical vignette” format. Now as far as the best clinical cases books for the Step 1 USMLE goes – there are two options – depending on your time commitment and cost you are willing to bear. The Underground Clinical Vignettes for the USMLE Step 1 are our favorites simple because the cases are great and you get a lot more of them and they are in our “Must Have” USMLE Books category. The downside is that the UCV series is expensive when you buy the whole series. The First Aid Cases for the Step One USMLE are also great cases, but there are fewer of them. The advantage of First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1 is that the text is much less expensive than the Underground Clinical Vignettes series, and that’s why First Aid Cases for the USMLE Step 1 has gained Apollo’s Book Review as a USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book.

High Yield Neuroanatomy“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is High Yield Neuroanatomy.
Neuroanatomy is another one of those subjects on the USMLE Step 1 that can get lost in shuffle between Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology, but is a subject that certainly cannot be ignored! That’s where High Yield Neuroanatomy comes into play. The book is truly “high-yield,” short at 160 pages, and covers almost everything that would be tested on the USMLE Step 1. High Yield Neuroanatomy should not serve as your only neuroanatomy textbook during your class, but once you have a basic understanding of the concepts and pathways that are important and will be tested time-and-time-again, High Yield Neuroanatomy is a great review for you. Some have pointed out that this book makes up for some of the shortcomings of First Aid in the area or neuroanatomy. Additionally, it has consistently be rated highly by medical students and even neurology residents as a good quick review – and that’s why High Yield Neuroanatomy has made Apollo’s Best Books Review as a “Highly Recommended” Book for the USMLE Step1.

BRS Gross Anatomy“Highly Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is BRS Gross Anatomy.
Gross Anatomy, another subject that absolutely consumed your first year of medical school and is not tested as heavily on the USMLE Step 1. . . a little disappointing. The best thing to remember about studying gross anatomy for the USMLE Step 1 is that all pathology and physiology grows out of you gross anatomy experience and knowledge. BRS Gross Anatomy is almost a comprehensive resource – which means it contains more information than what will actually be tested on the USMLE. Therefore we recommend you use BRS Gross Anatomy while studying for you exams in class and along the way. It has a lot of the information and minutia that you will encounter in your gross anatomy tests and dissections. While using BRS Gross Anatomy to study for the USMLE Step 1, we recommend you give the book a quick read get a few more details on some of the high points that are also mentioned in First Aid and Step-Up to the USMLE Step 1.

High Yield Behavioral Science“Highly Recommended”
The Final USMLE Step 1 “Highly Recommended” Book is High Yield Behavioral Science. Again, our bias is to find the shortest book possible that hits the really high-yield, tested information and High Yield Behavioral Science is it. As we find with so many of the USMLE Step 1 subjects that are tested not as tested, many of the comprehensive USMLE review books are a little lacking in these areas. We recommend you use High Yield Behavioral Science to supplement your more comprehensive resources and also hit those important points.  Although this short text is not a comprehensive Behavioral Science text, it does contain much of the information that will be test on the USMLE Step 1 in adequate detail for the test, assuming you have a basic understanding of the field to begin with; and that’s why Apollo’s USMLE Best Books Book Review for High Yield Behavioral Science is “Highly Recommended” for the USMLE Step1.

Step One USMLE “Other Great Recommended” Books

USMLE Step 1 Best Books Reviews and Recommendations – USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Books
Quick List - USMLE Step 1 Recall, Lippincott Biochemistry, Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple, Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple, High Yield Gross Anatomy, High Yield Embryology, Rapid Review Biochemistry, USMLE Step 1 Secrets

USMLE Step 1 Recall“Other Great Recommended”
The First USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is USMLE Step 1 Recall.
USMLE Step 1 Recall great an emphasizing key points for the USMLE Step 1. Some have mentioned that the NBME’s and USMLE are moving away from “buzzwords” for many of their questions, so this text cannot be relied upon as the sole source of information in studying for the USMLE. We recommend USMLE Step 1 Recall a great review book to hit the high points in a fast question and answer format. In addition, many students like question and answer as great way to test you basic knowledge in studying for the USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Recall Step 1 is the review book that fits the bill – and that’s why USMLE Step 1 Recall is one of our USMLE Best Books “Other Great Recommended” Books for the USMLE Step 1.

Lippincott Biochemistry“Other Great Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is Lippincott Biochemistry.
Lippincott Biochemistry is an absolutely great book for medical students studying biochemistry in class. It is a comprehensive biochemistry review textbook that has all the details you will need for both your first-year medical student class and for the USMLE. Just as Lippincott Pharmacology has great diagrams and table, and explains a lot of the complex USMLE Biochemistry subjects in an easy to understand fashion, Lippincott Biochemistry follows suit and is relatively easy and understandable. As far as a being a USMLE review book, we feel that Lippincott Biochemistry is a little too long for USMLE 1 review. It does a great job of covering the details and minutia of medical biochemistry, but that is a little too much information for USMLE review as there is relatively less biochemistry on the USMLE compared to some other fields. In total, we recommend Lippincott Biochemistry as a great comprehensive and understandable text for your biochemistry course, but it may be a too bulky for a USMLE review – and that’s why Lippincott Biochemistry is one of our “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Books.

Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple“Other Great Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple.
Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple is another great title from the Ridiculously Simple Series by MedMaster. This book is consistently rated as an excellent review for the USMLE Step 1 because of its simple explanations of complex topics and neuroanatomy pathways. This USMLE Step 1 review book does a great job of hitting the top neuro topics that will be covering in the USMLE Step 1 and the patients you will see on the wards. The presentations of neuroanatomical diseases and syndromes are clinically relevant. For those of you who would prefer a little more detail, try High-Yield Neuroanatomy, but for those of you who would like a fun and simple neuroanatomy (and a lot my memorable in our opinion) USMLE review book, try Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple. In addition, the CD is interactive and many find it useful, and that’s why Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple made our list of Step One USMLE Best Books “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Books.

Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple“Other Great Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple.
Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple is another good title from the Ridiculously Simple series. If you like the series, the cartoons, and the tables, then Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple is a recommended USMLE review book for you. The book presents a lot of drug information in tables and makes a lot of intuitive sense for grouping of drugs. The information contained within is not as comprehensive as Lippincott Pharmacology, and is probably a little light for USMLE review alone. We recommend you take a look at the book and see if the way the information is presented in a format that fits your learning style. If so, Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple is for you, and that’s why it is one of our Best Step One USMLE part 1 Books “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Book Recommendations.

High Yield Gross Anatomy“Other Great Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is High Yield Gross Anatomy.
High Yield Gross Anatomy is a recommended USMLE review book along with High Yield Embryology because both books, written by Dudek, cover these USMLE subjects in a clear and concise manner that is great for USMLE review. In general, both embryology and anatomy are “relatively low-yield” topics on the USMLE Step 1, but you can’t avoid either of these topics, and when taken together they do make up a small but substantial number of questions on the USMLE Step 1. If you can get a couple of extra questions right in the anatomy and embryo questions on the USMLE Step 1, that may just push you over the top to the USMLE Step 1 scores you need for a great residency. Both books by Dudek are a quick read, and relatively short, and they cover some of the topics that are not in First Aid for the Step 1 USMLE – and that’s why High Yield Gross Anatomy is one of Apollo’s USMLE Book Reviews “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Books.

High Yield Embryology“Other Great Recommended”
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is High Yield Embryology.
High Yield Embryology is a recommended Step One USMLE review book along with High Yield Gross Anatomy because both books, written by Dudek, cover these USMLE subjects in a clear and concise manner that is great for USMLE review. In general, both embryology and anatomy are “relatively low-yield” topics on the Step One USMLE, but you can’t avoid either of these topics, and when taken together they do make up a small but substantial number of questions on the USMLE Step 1. If you can get a couple of extra questions right in the anatomy and embryo questions on the USMLE Step 1, that may just push you over the top to the Step 1 USMLE scores you need for a great residency. Both books by Dudek are a quick read, and relatively short, and they cover some of the topics that are not in First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 – and that’s why High Yield Embryology is one of Apollo’s USMLE part 1 Book Reviews “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Books.

Rapid Review Biochemistry“Other Great Recommended” .
The Next USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is Rapid Review Biochemistry.
Following in the footsteps of Rapid Review Pathology, this book is a great and concise review of biochemistry. It is co-authored by Goljan and contains a lot of the pathological and biochemistry connections that are really useful for the Step One USMLE. For absolute content and your pharmacology course-work, Lippincott Pharmacology may be more useful as it is larger and more complete. In studying for the USMLE Step 1, some may prefer Rapid Review Pharmacology as it shorter and does a great job of covering the high points. In addition, this text provides many USMLE Step 1 style questions in the text itself and even more online with good explanations of the correct and incorrect answers. In all, if you are into the Rapid Review Series with Goljan audio and Rapid Review Pathology you may really prefer to use Rapid Review Biochemistry as your USMLE Step 1 biochem review book of choice – and that’s why Rapid Review Biochemistry is one of our UMLE Step 1 Best Books as “Other Great Recommended” USMLE Step 1 Review Books.

USMLE Step 1 Secrets“Other Great Recommended”
The Last USMLE Step 1 “Other Great Recommended” Book is USMLE Step 1 Secrets.
USMLE Step 1 Secrets is another rapid-fire quick read review book. We recommend using this book as a supplement to your other USMLE Step 1 resources to hit the high yield topics. It is especially useful for sitting down with you friends and study partners and quizzing one another because the questions and explanations are short and to-the-point. USMLE Step 1 Secrets is organized in a helpful systems-based format and follows the clinical case format that is so important for the USMLE Step 1. Quizzing one another is a useful (and often less-boring and more-enjoyable) way to break up the monotony of studying for the USMLE Step 1 and this is a great book for that purpose, and that’s why USMLE Step 1 Secrets in one of Apollo Audiobooks’ “Other Great Recommended” Books for the USMLE Step 1.
